I've gotten 1 myself in about 500 drops. That said, I've only gotten 2 plate helms in that time as well.

I think you can actually make the house public and then limit access to the doors to friends etc IIRC? Of course someone could still run (or stealth) in when you open the doors.

I think someone brought this up the other day at the M&G. According to Mesanna/Kyronix at the M&G (and a few supporters here) the targeting on non-hostiles doesn't happen. IE - nothing to see here - everything is working as expected.
