Atlantic is still molasses in ALL active town and MOST towns still do not have enough spawn

I will preface this that it is the experience on Atlantic. I don't care about your shard, or that it's an 'Atlantic problem', so leave this out of the conversation.

Here's how slow it is in ALL towns during active invasion. This is unacceptable: https://streamable.com/6vorap (Yew was current town)

Spawn tier hierarchy:
Trash tier: Nujelm, Vesper, Skara - seriously no spawn, most players I know (legitimate) skip since it's not worth doing. Delete these from the rotation.
Unacceptable tier: Trinsic - the spawn seems ok at best, but, too much spawn gets stuck in walls and the anti-stuck monster teleport doesn't trigger enough, or ever.
Ok at best tier: Yew, Britain, Moonglow. Fair bit of spawn but doesn't seem to scale high enough based on players.

What happened to Minoc? It was 'ok at best tier'.

  • Yeah as it stands I'm just not doing this event at all. Theoretically it would be fun, if it had more spawn and less lag, but in practice it's agonizingly dull and I don't thirst for UO gold enough to subject myself to it. This whole event cycle has been a flop. The Void Pool thing with the pirate hats was an apocalyptic lagfest, but at least you didn't have to scramble just to get a hit on anything.

I don't think they're going to change it further so I've been doing what I can here and there.

When the moons aligned, the right time, with the right amount of sampire bots running around, in the right town, you were able to pick off monsters here and there. That was until now.... people are just blatantly AFK parking an archer or 3 every screen on every corner. The little spawn is mostly dying before it spawns.

Welp, so much for that. Glad we have to suffer town invasions because 2 people asked for it and surely the rotating 8 cities will stop the bots!

    /facepalm

Bot situation is so bad it is kinda funny. I made a personal sport out of counting how many chars get stuck at the locked door of the Jhelom pit. My personal best is 11 so far.
I do not beleve for 1 second that any human would play in that kind of lag. Therefore, everyone you see  moving around even though they get stuck every two steps is automatic suspect in my book.

    Atlantic want more spawn,
    Atlantic want less lag,

    hmm......any rocket scientists online?

Im not sure if the spawn depends on the amount of people online on shard or the amount of people in town, here at a non-atlantic-shard theres hardly any spawn in Jhelom, but alot of people (bots) running around.  I would guess at any given time of thown theres more people(bots) in town that undead spawn.

    so.... Its the spagetticode stupid!

Good try, but, Winterspur had a much higher spawn rate in a much smaller area, aka density, and yet wasn't as laggy. Plus the Wastes was a huge area with a decent spawn rate, higher than most of these cities are.

    Yes, any rocket scientists?

Almost like doing a ToT on a smaller subserver, ie a Tokuno one, with not much going on would be inherently fast vs I don't know, let's say a Trammel Trinsic-Skara-Jhelom subserver with THOUSANDS of houses and THOUSANDS of items inside each of those houses.

Thick dashed lines are server lines: https://uo.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/trammel_all_lines.jpg

Let's also consider spawnable area. Which do you think would have higher density, Trinsic vs all 4 levels of Deceit? (This image is to scale)

Picking these cities on large subservers was the WORST IDEA ever. You get the worst of both worlds with LAG and LOW DENSITY.

I think the ship has sailed on the location of the spawn. It's town invasions this go round so we have to live with that.

I think the things that can be controlled at this point are the spawn rate and the blatant "afker's" that are huddled around the spawn points.

The bots suck so sure but at least you might be able to find a pocket of things spawn before they come into the screen; the archers/throwers around the campfires kill everything as they spawn...and they are parked at multiple spots. What happened to tagging people who are suspected afk? It's very obvious who is afk; I can see some of their ghosts (if they do eventually get overrun) just hanging there for the duration of the invasion. Automatic 24 hour tag should be applied to those guys.

Personally, I don't think increasing the spawn (on ATL) in the towns that need it would make it that much more laggy. Again, these are supposed to town invasions not pockets of spawn trickling in after getting lost along the way... crank it up!
  • Crank up the type of monsters too. At the highest level of population scaling they should start dropping in skeletal liches and crap like that, things that might last more than two seconds. A hundred people racing to one-shot zombies and skeletons is laughable.

I disagree about the difficulty scaling; all that does is favor the bots and need someone like myself (single player running around) more reliant that bots can help kill stuff; while also allowing the bots to kite around these higher level mobs after just hitting a few times. Spawn more lich lords or something fine but some monster with 10k HP wouldn't do anything because the necromage boss is a perfect example of it not being worth the time to kill.

Again, at this point I do not care about how many drops the bots get and making it harder on them because they are more flexible to adapt to the changes compared to the Dev team where they make a change and lock it in and won't change unless there is a major issue.

Not even sure this is possible but they need to outline the city and then just start dumping spawn into it (for ATL) all at once and pretty much non stop. Essentially it would be something like take the number of players in that city outline and multiply by 5 or 7 (or whatever number) and use that number for the amount of consistent spawn that should be in the city; ie 20 players x 5 would mean there should consistently be 100 monsters in the city alive at all times so if that means dropping in 100 every second to get it there so be it. That is how to make ATL like the other less populated shards that have spawn hanging around.
  • Listen, if they want the spawn to last longer than half a second after spawn-in, it's going to need to have enough HP to not get one-shotted.

Yea I get it but the 1 shotted spawn isn't the issue from the perspective of bots running around; the issue with those is the camping archers and they have no place in the game. The bots running around are going to miss spawn as it spawns behind them and they keep going.

Those camping toons should be hit with the no damage tag; if you are within those fires for more than like 3 minutes you should be hit with it. That's putting it lightly too; I think those toons should be banned tbh. Again this is ATL only where there is no need to stay in one place for more than a minute or two.

The lag on Atlantic Tram is worse during high activity periods, but is playable when the shard is a little more quiet.  I've ultimately decided to move about 90% of my focus on the Fel side where there have been no lag issues and I've found the spawn rate and drop rate to be much better (especially when running a potion).

My only complaint is that Jhelom and Skara are quite annoying with the reduced spawn rate.  I've reached a point where I simply will avoid those cities and not burn through a Fortune potion if that's the city that is up during my limited play time.  Nujelm is a tiny bit better, but not by much.   If there is going to be any further tweaking to this event, it would be to increase spawn rate in those towns.

Oh, and I've still not seen the spawn once on Minoc or Magincia.  I assume this is by design?

Opinions from dead-shard heroes are not required. Especially one who plays a whole flock of throwers at once.
  • This game is pathetic anymore. Atlantic isn't even THAT populated compared to the average shard in the good old days. The game's infrastructure and technical capacity are just that badly decayed. Nothing works on Atlantic, vendor search doesn't work, events don't work, everything is trash code running on five cents worth of cloud service that only functions when there are no users.

As a player on atlantic, I can attest to the insane lag.   Its currently unplayable...even after the 11/20 hotfix.   Melee chars have no chance against camping archers.

$20 says they downgraded the servers since.. The game has been in maintenance mode for a long while.

I would have more optimism towards a single client than server-code optimization.   That is a project so big,  it would be more cost effective to just make UO2.

I've gotten this a few times too. We don't run away from our problems.
Perhaps the devs should just fix the glaring issues with the game?

Fix the game? Make it great for everyone? Yea, that sounds like a much better idea.
