This game is pathetic anymore. Atlantic isn't even THAT populated compared to the average shard in the good old days.
$20 says they downgraded the servers since.. The game has been in maintenance mode for a long while.
I would have more optimism towards a single client than server-code optimization. That is a project so big, it would be more cost effective to just make UO2.
It would probably make sense to consolidate all of the west coast servers to 1 virtual machine, all the east coast servers to 1 virtual machine, and europe to 1 virtual machine. I'd imagine there are many AWS VM instances that are far more powerful than the "original" late 90s era HW used.
Unknown whether there is a front-end or how the sub-servers are split up -- are these separate processes, etc?
It be an interesting five-on-fridays type question to ask/answer. What was/is the design of the overall service.
Single client seems straightforward, though it's not clear there is even the motivation to do this.
There is like 200-250 chars farming this event at prime time. That should not stretch any decent servers capabilities. This game supposedly had 250k subscribers at one point and now 250 chars farming the event makes it unplayable.
