I am unable to answer your question on the duration of buffs. It would appear an update has been missed at some point. The in game buff tool tip agrees with UOGuide. I will edit.

no, petals of trinsic only give a strength boost for 5 minutes. Fish pies last for 5 minutesthe various small fishes give a 3 minute boostBalms and lotions from stealing last for 30 minutes.

protection lasts till it is re-cast. You should have a buff icon if it is active. You can also re-cast it from a scroll, it's only a 2nd circle spell and can be bought from npc mage shops.

I would use the rock hammer. Using the hammer gives a lot of failure, but you will also get more stones before the pocket runs out. If mining for high level colors you can use the rock hammer with maps from BoDs or Vela.

but you have! Cold damage IS elemental damage. Anything other than 100% physical is classed as elemental damage. A weapon with 100% cold damage is the aim.
