Tamers, pets and buffs and potential for new training abilities
A while back a thread was posted in general discussion regarding pets and interaction with the controlling character....

I've been thinking about some of the points brought up in the discussion. Tamers themselves (no pet) have always been hybrid versions of other character templates. The tamers are fundamentally limited by the skill points (200 to 360 points) put into taming, animal lore and vet which would normally round out the character build:
- Tamer Warrior/Paladin/Samurai - keep weapon skill and Tactics might give up Parry, Resist, etc.
- Tamer Spellcaster - probably gives up Inscription, Resist, Wrestling if even in template to start
Pets (and therefore tamers) received a massive buff in Publish 97 https://uo.com/wiki/ultima-online-wiki/publish-notes/publish-97/
However, this increased the power of the pet, but not the tamer character. So, what if new pet training abilities were released to focus on buffing the tamer character rather than the pet they are controlling?
Would it be worth it to have any training options such as:
- Bodyguard: gives tamer-mage and tamer-bard templates Wrestling skill of pet
- Faithful: gives the tamer the Parry skill of the pet
- Guardian: gives tamer Resisting Spells skill of the pet
- Mana Battery: gives tamer the Meditation skill of the pet
- Synchronized : gives the tamer the Focus skill of the pet
A departure from primarily skill related buffs...some options that provide the character's equipment bonuses to the pet:
- Comrade: the pet the Hit-Change-Increase and Defense-Chance-Increase of the tamer's equipment
- Familiar: the pet gains the Spell Damage Increase of the tamer's equipment
Straight off buffs normally provided by equipment such as Resists, Lower Mana Cost, Damage Increase, Spell Damage Increase are not good candidates for new pet training options, as they are bonuses provided by equipment which is as available tamer templates as any other character.
So:
A spellcasting tamer might have one pet out at a time, but could choose between pets providing Bodyguard (Wrestling) and Guardian (Resist Spells) bonus skills. Or take a casting pet with the Familiar training.
A warrior might decide to have two pets out instead, one to aid in damage with Comrade training, and the other a swamp dragon or horse mount with Faithful training to grant Parry skill missing from their character template. Or if an Archer lacking parry, might opt for Mana Battery or Synchronized.
