House / Surename Creation and Importance

I don't post in these public channels much, but those that recognize the alias may be surprised to find that I've decided to stop campaigning against NL and instead, give it a go... that said, I've already got a newbie challenge - I chose a Surename or House name from the Bard then decided against my character name; deleted the toon and came back to the bard with the intent to use the same House / Surename. The system tells me that it's not available. Aside from simply choosing another, any ideas here? I've yet to get "support" to respond.

I'll add, I poked around online and haven't really discovered the purpose behind the Surename concept or where it appears during play.

It will be to differentiate between you and someone with the same first name. so if there is a Bob Smith that wins a regatta or does a shard first or whatever, some guy named Bob Jones can't say, "i'm the Bob that did that, not him" basically that's all it is for that I can figure out.

Thanks for the reply @Victim_Of_Siege. I figured as much and had always used a Surename in regular UO already. That said, I'm hopeful the "support" team can allow my original surename choice to be used.

I heard the plan was for items to drop in future versions of New Legacy to have your house name on them as like legacy items.

Not sure if that's true or still the plan for house names but something to consider.

So naming my charater BahnMi of House Salad probably a mistake?
