Should i make a gatherer or hunt merchant ships?

I have a char slot I was using to make a gatherer, but someone told me a gatherer is a waste of a slot because I can just hunt merchant ships for my goods... thoughts? Also how the hell do u find merchant ships?

The above template makes a pretty good gatherer and lets me kill off the serps from fishing, the ele's from mining with the garg's pick, and random stuff I find in the woods.

Plus, it leaves 40 points for something else, like Tinkering to make my own picks.

No idea how it compares to getting loot from merchant ships.

Merchant ship loot is a bit random and is unlikely to satisfy your crafting resource needs in the long run.
