What kind of mechanic do you want to be?
Lots of car mechanics need to work with vehicles where other mechanics have done work (many prior hands). If a customer went to a mechanic, and the mechanic said they couldn't fix a problem, because others had worked on the car in the past, the customer would just find another mechanic. Likewise, if a mechanic said the job was too difficult, due to the complexity of the vehicle, the customer would likely just find another mechanic. Odds are, the auto-shop/mechanic would have to adapt, seek training, or go out of business.
Issue this google search: "how to work with legacy code". And keep this in mind: "Shoot for the stars, and aim for the moon".

tbh I never accepted those responses for the exact reason you pointed out. What profession / industry / companies would allow this response for a decade and not correct it.
google how many AAA games have been developed in under 5 years.
5 years for NL is bewildering to be polite here
it amazing how small teams on other games can pump out content non stop all year.
In all walks of life, you have to rebuild companies with nothing to go on, rebuild houses, infrastructure, code, finance systems, it happens everywhere.
Whilst I understand they are human, and I've never attacked them personally, I never accepted that explanation. It does not ring true to me, in any real world situation I have ever seen, or fixed.
I don't know why you're polite here, when in the last 24 hours you've publicly said the dev team is too incompetent to handle UO and that the rights should be sold off to somebody other than Broadsword.
Those "small teams on other games" are not dealing with anything that resembles the scale or age of UO. If you've been around long enough, you remember TheGrimmOmen posting a lot about all of the problems with adding new stuff to UO and dealing with the older codebase, and that was in 2011 or 2012 when there was a bigger team (and he was just talking about the artwork). If you are talking about free shards, they lack corporate/institutional constraints that UO has - it has tens of thousands of paying customers, some of whom have been around for decades, and they do have to tread lightly on anything that could screw things up for those long-time players, whether you or I like that or not, because while EA might ignore UO for the most part, if they screw up, EA can simply end it, or run the clock out until the 30th anniversary and then end it. EA has a bad history of ending fan-favorite franchises that were doing much better than UO.
Instead of claiming that the UO team is incompetent and implying that the team isn't adding bug fixes or new content for production shards, what you should be saying is that you are unhappy that they aren't doing things the way you want. When you publicly call them names, claim they are incompetent, and act like they aren't doing bug fixes or new content, you are damaging UO in the eyes of potential returning players or new players.
Now you might claim to love UO and that you would never try to damage UO in the eyes of potential new or returning players, but the volume of negativity coming out of you speaks otherwise, and you are in fact doing damage regardless of what you claim or think.
When I was making the decision to come back earlier this year, I came across a lot of negative posts from people like you that, if I only listened to you all, I would have avoided UO like the plague and went with free shards or just stuck to one of the other 3-4 MMOs I have regularly played over the past decade (or the many more that I tried and eventually left for one reason or another). Instead, I looked past that, looked at the fact that you all are a minority of UO players (most don't post or read the forums) and came back, and my kids and I are having fun.
You can be upset with the direction of a long-time MMO (as an EVE and WOW player, I'm used to a lot of people being upset and making their concerns known), but you can do so constructively without publicly questioning the competence of the developers or trying to imply things that are not happening and without trying to damage the MMO itself.
and I stopped reading after the first paragraph so as to all the rest of your twisted bs you are 100% correct
free shards are adding real content and they have smaller teams and doing it back to back year after year
In my opinion.. you're doing exactly this.. to any of the future new players or returning ones.. as soon they gonna step a toe on any UO official shard.. by defending the undefendable.. just look at my avatar picture while considering EVERYTHING else happening right now.. like holiday or NL., You cannot be seriously serious. -.-
They actively killing the game with their heretic events just to bribe the actual "players" base with copy pasta content (mostly rewarding the bots farms)
I said nothing last time but u tripling down.. You saying he's unhealthy to sub x accounts and should touch grass.. without realising the irony of it.. u clearly not a casual MMO user.. MMO are not healthy.. pointing out someone that is MORE unhealthy than you to bash on his person, in those term is... very hypocritical.
imo, u do the same for the "future" of UO.. u're just a bit less worse, in the short term.. but long term you are more damaging for the future of UO.. remove your pink glasses, please.
Have a great day!

It’s comical to me you are so frightened of somehow bod scripters get some sort of advantage.

On the other hand, you have your mom'n'pop main street mechanic. Even then they'll refuse tons of work and certain problems. EVs and manual transmissions specifically ZERO mechanics in my town will touch. Manual transmissions are a breeze to work on, two shafts, a diff (if fwd), and a few selector forks.. very few parts. And I don't blame them for not wanting to work on high current lithium battery packs, ie, IEDs. But again, these mechanics still do absolutely fine financially.
Why won't they touch these? They stick to what's easiest for them and what they can turn a quick profit on. Why reinvent the wheel when you don't have to? Spark plugs, starters, alternators, timing belts, etc. pretty much universally the same on all cars. And that's basically what we're seeing with UO, the cookie cutter ToT garbage over and over because it's what they've deemed 'works' for them. If you don't like this, the best thing to do is stop buying potions of glorious fortune or close accounts.
I don't want to defend UO but your analogy fails unfortunately.

It's a corporate crook move.. they want to sell you UO2, 3 ,4 ,5... instead of fixing UO.. still in good shape but u know.. capitalism.
Cuz any mechanics can work on any car.. they usually hate the german brand (cuz they built VERY differently)
Now if your point is.. now the mechanics are more like coder/engineer (more n more computers) instead of being "mechanics" i'd agree.. the new model the computers part most mechanics ain't form to work on that outside their own "brand".. cuz they do mechanics.. a manual transmission is a manul transmission.. and except the german brand (volvo, etc, I believe) all the other brand is almost a copy pasta.
Try to go in a real garage.. avoid car dealership garage like the plague when it's off guarantee. a small pro tip

Continually a really bad problem on these forums where people try to pseudo straw man some argument when it's explained in literally the next sentence. Average age of UO players is 68 so I'm not surprised.
I don't go to mechanics. I do 99% of the work myself unless I don't have time.

Since u talking about MECHANICS (the theme park mechanics).. u'd have a valid point if u wanna talk about ELECTRIC cars.. those are engineer.. like tesla.. more than just mechanics.
Kinda ironic.. u did what u accuse me to do.. quote more and understand the meaning of thos words, please.. I believe in you @username
Very good point.
Edit: just in case.. here.. we can UNDERSTAND and read.. u could code/fix 99% of the game yourself.. if u had the time.
Are u telling us u own an illegal server, now?
Edit2: just in case.. he's talking about a mechanics that CANNOT fix the issue.. not a mechanic that REFUSE to fix it for x reasons.. with your point of re-use tot "garbage" (very bad point.. u pretty much saying they lack dev power and doing money grabbing with copy pasta event.. while he was saying they ain't QUALIFY to work on certain issues for x reasons)
Anyway.. I did my best here. I believe in you!
Edit3: just cuz, I appreciate you:
Now u can do the same with mine.. this example is to help you understand the main topic here.
